I guess we’re supposed to rejoice that the new pope finally seems to get it, and be happy that the Catholic Church coming around after two thousand years of inflicting unfettered misery on the world.
The new guy to don the big pointy hat has every late night show falling in love with him, and every magazine has contracted Francis Fever, tracking each wonderful photo-op. Pope Francis makes a new open statement almost daily now that it seems he’s alright with the rest of us, except for that American nun’s group which wanted to help the poor AND gay rights AND he retracted that statement about atheists being good people – I guess we are not getting into Heaven after all (sigh!).

These views must have put Francis in some hot water when he was Argentinian Archbishop Bergoglio–well he would have if only the Archbishop had only spoken up at the time.

Reports of one wealthy contributor withholding a seven figure check due to the recent comments are troubling though we cannot blame this rich Catholic for his trepidation for he grew up in the Catholic Church of marble and gold. This poor mixed-up rich prick follows by example. It gets a little confusing when the richest private institution in the world, the same institution which invented buying indulgences for forgiveness of sins, suddenly attacks the laissez-faire deregulated free market which made him so stinking rich.

And the Vatican banking scandals where untold sums have been laundered and hidden with criminal intent have also tarnished the brand.

A much needed adjustment with new reports of systemic child rape and abuse and the subsequent attempts to cover it up and demonize victims. Things are so bad that the UN has gotten involved.

People were leaving the church in droves, something had to be done, and, doing what any good business does, the church decided to revamp the image. It’s not hard to look good after the pope who was known for his reactionary views. Remember Benedict ran around Africa saying condoms helped spread AIDS.
This really brings into question that papal infallibility when once pope contradicts previous popes. Is God changing His mind? Maybe we can all pretending that the guy in the Italian cut white suit has the Big Man’s cell phone number.
