Recently I was riding through Phoenixville PA with a friend when I took a look down the sidewalk.
“Hey that guy’s dressed as Jesus and carrying a cross!”
As we passed, I bit my tongue not to shout any taunts (though some good ones came to mind). I didn’t want to go all Roman soldier on this man who so obviously had more burden than that big piece of wood
on his shoulders. My friend, who was also attempting to maintain his spot in a line of cars, tried to get a cell
photo. But there he was dragging treated lumber across unforgiving concrete in bronze age garb and a crown of thorns.
I began to wonder, how common is this thing? and Why is this a thing?
I found out that a man by the name of Arthur Blessit has been at this act for forty years, dragging his cross all around the world in the name of Christ (although Arthur seems to be as much if not more so about himself).
A survey of the internet threw up great mountains of information on the subject. Just type“man carrying cross” into Google, Youtube, Bing, or any media search engine, and you’ll find a multitude of guys sticking two poles of intersecting wood to their backs to demonstrate just how much they love Christ. [Below I provide you a slide show sample of what I found]
Perhaps they want to associate with the heroic image of self-sacrifice. Or revel perversely in the latent fetish of a tortured man’s pain. These guys would not be the first to find the crucifix sexually exciting,
specifically the somewhat erotic poetry of cloistered nuns.
I was also curious to see if any women were doing this cross dragging thing – not one could I find on the internet. Perhaps its manly exhibition for Christian zealots, like dominating wives or bombing abortion clinics. What would Jesus do (if he were a real person and could see these self-aggrandizing roadside displays? Seriously, WWJD? WTFWJD? IDK.
